Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS9i – A Good Buy For You?

Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS9i

The Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS9i is currently the premium model in the Freestrider series.

These trainers are an upgrade on the standard elliptical machine. Instead of running in a set stride, the stride adapts to you.

Because you choose the stride you want, you have the advantage of getting 3 machine motions in one unit.

You can use the machine as a stepper with short strides, jog like you would on an elliptical or run with long strides as on a treadmill.

The FS9i also comes with the largest multi-color console with web browser, heavier flywheel for added stability and even incline/decline for extra crosstraining.

Is the Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS9i a good buy for you?

Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS9i Review – The Benefits:

#1 Up To 38 Inch Adaptable Stride

With a regular elliptical, you’re locked into a fixed stride length (so you have to fit your natural running gait into that stride).

But with the FS9i you can choose your most comfortable stride and even get strides of up to 38 inches long. This opens up a world of possibilities as the machine adjusts to your natural stride – and not the other way around.

This makes for a more ergonomically correct and more comfortable workout with less strain on your hips, knees and back.

Because you set the stride, you can use the FS9i as a stepper with short up and down strides, an elliptical with jogging natural stride – or even a treadmill with running/sprinting extra long strides.

This means you get a more comprehensive workout and burn more calories overall as your leg muscles are always being challenged and not adapting.

#2 Extremely Low Impact

Unlike a traditional elliptical trainer, the footpedals on the FS9i ride on belts, rather than the traditional rails attached to the crank. This gives you more of a feeling of “running on air” and is smooth with nearly zero impact.

This design is great if you are prone to muscle injury or shin splints.

#3 More Resistance Levels And Heavier Flywheel

The Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS9i has more resistance levels than the other models – giving you more room to grow as your fitness levels improve. Also not that it has a heavier 20 pound flywheel.

This helps to give you a smoother feeling motion and it also helps the machine to stand up a bit better to longer, more intense use.

#4 Extra Large Web Browser

Of course Nordictrack puts one of their most popular features on this machine – the touch screen web browser. So you can surf the net, read your emails, watch Youtube videos and more while you workout. Also note that this is a full 10 inches across – so it’s larger than the other models as well.

This makes it much easier to read your stats or read the web browser as you workout.

#5 iFit LIVE

The iFit LIVE option comes built in with this machine. (so you don’t need to buy the extra module). With iFit LIVE you can do some very cool things.

You can download new workouts from Jillian Michaels where she coaches you through your workouts using the console speakers. You can run famous trails (already mapped out for you) and watch actual landmarks pass you by in the console.

So you can run through the streets of Paris or explore the shores of Hawaii and it’s the next best thing to being there.

You can also track your workout progress over time or get custom meal plans delivered to you based on your daily calorie burn. iFit LIVE basically turns a regular elliptical into your own personal fitness studio.

#6 Enhanced Crosstraining with Incline and Decline

Incline changes the slope of your running path and can help add some crosstraining to your workout. The FS9i gives you power inclines up to 10 degrees AND power declines of 10 degrees. None of the other models have the decline option so it’s unique to the FS9i model.

#7 Free Heart Rate Monitor

heart rate monitorIf you get the Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS9i direct from the Manufacturer here, you can also get a Free wireless heart rate chest strap included.

This is great since wireless monitors are much more accurate than hand sensors and you get constant feedback from the console window.

Plus you don’t have to continually grasp the hand sensors – which can disrupt your upper body workout.

iFit LIVE Subscription

If you want to try iFit out, you will need to get an online subscription from the Manufacturer here. This will run you about $99 a year.

However you don’t need to get iFit. The trainer works perfectly fine without it – and also gives you 38 built-in workouts already.

So you can always wait to get iFit if and when you’re ready to try it out.

Motion is A Bit Different

Because you set the stride length by how hard and which direction you push the pedals, it’s not what people are used to when using an elliptical. It may take a bit of getting used to at first.

Bottom Line?

If you’re looking for an upgrade on a traditional elliptical that lets you set your own pace and stride, the FS9i is a great, premium option. You’ll never “adapt” to one motion and can constantly challenge your body (and burn more calories) with this machine.

Plus it’s the only Freestride Trainer that also gives you decline to add more ways to change up your routine.

With the stronger base, heavier flywheel and higher stability, it’s also a great choice for multiple user families where the machine will get more use.

Plus the entertainment options are fantastic on this machine especially with the larger, touch-screen web browser, iFit LIVE options, iPod dock and more. You’ll never run out of things to do!

Where To Buy and Save

While it’s fairly new on the market, you can get the FS9i model direct from the Manufacturer here. You can also get Free Shipping as of this writing as well, which will save you about $150.
