Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS9i

The Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS9i is currently the premium model in the Freestrider series.

These trainers are an upgrade on the standard elliptical machine. Instead of running in a set stride, you actually set your own stride.

The stride is adaptable, meaning you can choose the stride (up to 38 inches) that feels most comfortable for you.

So you can use the machine as a stepper with short strides, jog like you would on an elliptical or run with long strides as on a treadmill – 3 machine uses in 1.

The FS9i also comes with all the bells and whistles including a huge multi-color console with web browser, heavier flywheel and even decline.

Is the FS9i a good buy for you? Here’s a brief rundown of how it works and what you need to know:

Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS9i Review – The Benefits:

#1 Up to 38 Inch Stride

freestrider FS7i motionsWith a regular elliptical, you have to go at a set stride length. But with the FS9i you can choose your stride – up to 38 inches long. This opens up a world of possibilities as the machine adjusts to your natural stride – and not the other way around.

So you can use it as a stepper with short up and down strides, an elliptical with jogging natural stride – or even a treadmill with running/sprinting extra long strides.

This means you get a more comprehensive workout and burn more calories overall as your leg muscles are always being challenged and not adapting.

It also makes it a more ergonomically correct workout as it adjusts to your body’s natural stride, which means less strain and injury, very cool.

#2 Extremely Low Impact

Unlike a traditional elliptical trainer, the footpedals on the FS9i ride on belts, rather than the traditional rails attached to the crank. This gives you more of a feeling of “running on air” and is smooth with nearly zero impact.

This design is great if you are prone to muscle injury or shin splints.

#3 More Compact

The Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS9i is more compact in size than a traditional elliptical. It’s technically a center drive machine (center drive elliptical are more compact than a rear or front-drive trainer) so it’s more of a square footprint than a long rectangle.

#4 Built-In Web Browser

Of course Nordictrack puts one of their most popular features on this machine – the touch screen web browser. So you can surf the net, read your emails, watch Youtube videos and more while you workout. Also note that this is a full 10 inches across – so it’s larger than the FS7i model.

#5 iFit LIVE

Again, this is built-in (so you don’t need to buy the extra module). With iFit LIVE you can do an endless amount of things.

You can download new workouts from Jillian Michaels where she coaches you through your workouts. You can fun famous trails (already mapped out for you). You can even map out new trails with Googlemaps and watch actual landmarks pass you by in the console.

You can also track your workout progress over time and set new fitness goals.

#6 Up to 10 Degree Incline and a 10 Degree Decline

Incline changes the slope of your running path and can help add some crosstraining to your workout. The FS9i gives you power inclines up to 10 degrees AND power declines of 10 degrees.

#7 Free Heart Rate Monitor

heart rate monitorThe Nordictrack FS9i comes with a free wireless heart rate monitor to keep you in your target fat-burning zone.

This is great since wireless monitors are much more accurate than hand sensors and you get constant feedback from the console window.

Plus you don’t have to continually grasp the hand sensors – which can be annoying.

How is the Nordictrack FS9i Different Than The FS7i?

The FS9i gives you some major advantages over the FS7i including:

nordictrack freestrider FS9i web browser#1 Larger Web Browser

The FS9i has a larger browser at 10 inches vs 7 inches. This makes it easier to read and more fun to watch those Youtube or other online videos!

#2 More Substance and Weight

There’s a bit more substance and weight to this machine with a higher user weight capacity. So it’s a great option for heavier users (or multiple user households).

#3 Decline Option

While the FS7i model has incline it does not have the decline option that you get with the FS9i.

#4 More Resistance Levels

The FS9i has more resistance levels than the FS7i (26 vs 24). So there’s a bit more room to grow here.

You also get more built-in workout options (38 vs 35)

#6 Heavier Flywheel

Although the flywheel on the FS7i is a very respectable 20 pounds, the flywheel on the FS9i is a bit heavier at 22 pounds – so again it helps with heavier and more intense workouts.

Bottom Line?

If you’re looking for an upgrade on a traditional elliptical that lets you set your own pace and stride, the FS9i is a great option. You’ll never “adapt” to one motion and can constantly challenge your body (and burn more calories) with this machine.

Plus it’s the only Freestride Trainer that also gives you decline to add more ways to change up your routine.

With the stronger base and higher stability, it’s also a great choice for multiple user families where the machine will get more use. Plus the entertainment options are endless on this machine (iFit LIVE, HD video workouts, iPod dock, built-in workouts, web browser…) You’ll never run out of things to do!
