Nordictrack Freestrider FS5i – Right For You?
The Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS5i is currently the most affordable model in the Freestrider series.
These machines are a new take on the traditional elliptical. Instead of pedalling in a pre-determined running stride, you actually choose your own stride.
So you can do short strides like a stair climber, jog like an elliptical or run with long strides as on a treadmill.
So you get the motion options of 3-machines-in-1. This is also great for multiple user homes as everyone can choose the best stride for them.

Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS5i Review – Pros:
#1 Up to 32 Inch Stride
With a regular elliptical, you have to go at a fixed stride length. But with the FS5i you can choose your stride – up to 32 inches long! This opens up a world of possibilities as the machine adjusts to your natural stride – and not the other way around.
So you can use it as a stepper with short up and down strides, an elliptical with jogging natural stride – or even a treadmill with running/sprinting extra long strides.
This means you get an overall better workout. You’ll burn more calories too since your lower body muscles are always being challenged and not adapting.
It also makes it a more ergonomically correct workout as it adjusts to your body’s natural stride, which means less strain and injury, very cool.
#2 Ultra Low Impact
Unlike a traditional elliptical trainer, the footpedals on the FS5i ride on belts, rather than the traditional rails attached to the crank. This gives you more of a feeling of “running on air” and is smooth with nearly zero impact.
This design is great if you are prone to muscle injury or shin splints.
#3 More Compact
The Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS5i is more compact in size than a traditional elliptical. It’s technically a center drive machine (center drive elliptical are more compact than a rear or front-drive trainer) so it’s more of a square footprint than a long rectangle.
You don’t have the long track out behind that you get with front drive trainers – which really cuts down on the space requirements.
#4 Tablet Holder Above the Console
The sturdy bracket above the console is great to hold your tablet. You can watch your favorite shows or movies as you workout.
You can also use the tablet to connect with iFit LIVE online and watch real landmarks pass you by as you workout. (See below for iFit details).
#5 iFit LIVE
The FS5i comes iFit LIVE compatible. iFit LIVE is an online subscription service that lets you track your workout stats online. You can also download new workouts to your machine for more challenge.
The best thing about iFit is that you can run trails all over the world (from Paris to Hawaii) and watch actual landmarks pass you by in the screen (you’ll need your tablet for this option). It’s a great way to challenge yourself and stay entertained.
#6 iPod Dock
You can also plug in your iPod and play your favorite tunes through the built-in speakers- one more way to enjoy your workouts.
Nordictrack Freestride Trainer FS5i Elliptical – Cons:
Dual Color Console
Unlike the FS7i or FS9i models which have multi color consoles, the FS5i only has a dual color console. So you do lose a bit in terms of graphics. It’s simpler than the other models – and the console window is smaller as well.
No Web Browser
If you’re looking for a simpler, more affordable Freestride trainer, you’ll probably love the FS5i model. It gives you the main advantage of the Freestrider: the ability to set your own stride for a more optimal workout.
The adaptable stride is also great for families with multiple users since everyone can choose the stride that feels best for them.
The FS5i Freestrider also gives you a lower impact workout which can make your workouts a lot more comfortable. While it doesn’t carry some of the bells and whistles of the FS7i model, if you want a more affordable Freestrider model, it might be worth considering.
