Trying to decide between a Nordictrack Elliptical vs Bowflex Max Trainer?
Wondering which is best for you?
Well, this really depends on which Nordictrack elliptical you’re actually comparing to the Max Trainer.
But in general, Nordictrack makes some of the most popular ellipticals on the market right now. You’ll find options you can’t even find on commercial machines like full-color HD consoles, virtual reality training, adjustable strides and more.
On the other hand, the Bowflex Max Trainer is one of the most interesting new elliptical-trainer-hybrid machines to come along in years.
By combining the high calorie burning motion of a stair-climber with the total body training of an elliptical trainer, it helps you burn a lot more calories than your standard elliptical trainer.
So which is best for you? What benefits do you get with each?
Let’s take a look at how they compare.
Nordictrack Elliptical Vs Bowflex Max Trainer – Price
Budget is often the first thing to consider when choosing your home fitness equipment. The Bowflex Max has 3 different models to choose from, the M3, M5 and M7.
The M3 is the most affordable starting around $999. The M5 is the most popular mid-price model at around $1699 and the M7 is the premium Max Trainer ranging up to about $2399. (However you can get a discount coupon code on ANY Max trainer direct from the Manufacturer here).
Nordic Track has a range of starter to high end elliptical models as well. The prices start a bit lower than the Max Trainer – around $799.
They range up to premium, commercial grade models for around $2999. You can compare the latest Nordictrack elliptical trainer models and even get Free Shipping here.
So in terms of price, Nordictrack has a few more models that start slightly (not much) cheaper than the Max Trainer.
What Type of Exercise Do You Enjoy?
This is one of the biggest differences between the Bowflex Max and Nordictrack elliptical trainer. With the Max you get one type of motion only – the up-and-down stair climbing action.
This is great for calorie burning – but not great for variety.
With a Nordictrack elliptical trainer (or any elliptical machine), you can go forwards or backwards in a running-style motion. So you have a bit more flexibility.
And if you consider the Nordictrack Freestride Trainer (see pic above), you get even MORE motion options.
This has an adaptable stride which means you can use it for up-and-down stair-climbing motions, longer jogging style motions or even longer hurdling type motions.
But even if you don’t want to consider something like the Freestride trainer, the bottom line here is to ask yourself whether you enjoy a stair-stepping motion (on the Bowflex Max) vs a running-style motion (on the elliptical trainer).
The type of motion you prefer is probably the type of machine you should choose as you’re more likely to use it over the long run.
Which Machine Burns More Calories?
This is a tricky one. Bowflex gets the points here – mainly because Bowflex has done the testing and has the results to prove it.
According to Bowflex testing, you can burn up to 2.5 times more calories on a Max Trainer than on a traditional elliptical, treadmill or stair climber.
Some trial users even burned up to 600 calories in a half hour – which is amazing!
This is due to the high-calorie burning stair climbing exercise (which uses a lot of large lower body muscles) as well as the special HIIT training workout that Bowflex has designed and included in all of their Max Trainers.
HIIT workouts (high intensity interval training) have been shown to help you burn calories for up to 48 hours after your workout. They’re very effective at calorie burning.
That doesn’t mean you can’t burn just as many calories on a Nordictrack elliptical with your own HIIT training workout. It just means Bowflex has the jump here and has been smart enough to advertise this:
Nordictrack Elliptical vs Bowflex Max – Console Differences
The console of your machine can make a huge difference in the effectiveness and enjoyment of your workout. After all, it’s what you’ll be staring at for most of your workout.
Bowflex Max Trainer consoles are well-laid out and give you all the basic feedback that you need:
Depending on the model, you can also get built-in workouts and even a free Bowflex App to track your workouts over time. There’s also a media shelf and tablet holder on every console.
The Nordictrack elliptical trainer consoles are also well laid out and also include the tablet holders above the consoles.
However the higher end Nordictrack elliptical trainers also come with full-color, touch-screen HD consoles as you can see below:
So you can watch iFit workouts in HD, run trails all over the world or even taking a walking tour of a famous place you want to visit – all from your console. This can make workouts a lot more fun.
Most Nordictrack elliptical consoles also include iPod docks with speakers so you can play your favorite workout music. They also have multi-speed fans to keep you cool – something that the Max Trainer consoles do not have.
Video Streaming, World Travels and Bluetooth Tracking – Oh My!
Both Bowflex and Nordictrack are fighting to put the latest fitness technology on their machines. And they both give you some incredible options. Let’s start with Bowflex.
Both the M5 and M7 models (not the M3) come with Bluetooth tracking. Using the Free Bowflex App you can track your calories burned, heart rate and more.
You can also sync your workouts with MyFitnessPal, Google Fit and Apple Health to reach new goals and keep track of your fitness over time.
Plus Bowflex is currently also offering livestream workout videos you can watch from your tablet or phone – very cool.
Now let’s talk about Nordictrack.
All Nordictrack elliptical trainer models (this year) come with the option to add iFit Coach.
iFit Coach takes your elliptical online. From there you can track your workouts over time, set new goals and more.
You can also run trails all over the world – from Paris to Hawaii and watch as real landmarks pass you by in the console or tablet screen.
iFit also has Livecast workouts that don’t just cover elliptical trainer workouts – you can also take workouts focusing on yoga, stretching, HIIT training and more.
So overall, iFit actually gives you a lot more options and fun things to do than Bowflex. However on the other hand the Bowflex App is free. iFit Coach is a membership-based service that you have to pay to renew every year. So it really depends on what you want.
(Note: You don’t need to buy an iFit members hip to use the elliptical trainers – they work just fine without iFit.)
Other Differences – Incline and Space Considerations
Another option you get with most Nordictrack elliptical trainers is the ability to add incline to your training.
Incline changes the slope of your elliptical pathway – helping you to work different muscle groups. This is a great way to get a better crosstraining workout overall.
This is something you don’t get with the Max Trainer.
On the other hand the Bowflex Max trainer does give you a space advantage – it’s much smaller than a traditional elliptical. So if you’re in an apartment or a condo, it might be a better option.
So which is best when comparing the Nordictrack elliptical vs Bowflex Max Trainer?
Well, they each have their benefits. The Max Trainer is more compact and has been shown to help you burn more calories than a standard elliptical trainer.
On the other hand Nordictrack ellipticals can give you enhanced consoles, more crosstraining options and even virtual reality training with iFit.
So at the end of the day it comes down to what you’re looking for.
