The Nordictrack E8.7 Elliptical is currently the most affordable (re: cheapest) elliptical in the Nordictrack lineup, coming in at around $799 direct.
To get a Nordictrack crosstrainer for under $800 is pretty impressive.
And it does come with some features that other starter elliptical brands don’t give you like ramp and iFit LIVE.
But how does it really stack up? Here’s a brief review of what you should know before you buy:
Price: $799 + Free Shipping
Resistance Levels: 22
iFit? Yes – Compatible
iPod Dock? Yes
Weight Capacity: 325 lbs

Pros of the Nordictrack E8.7 Elliptical:
#1 Power Ramp
Incline changes the slope of the elliptical movement – which means you end up training different muscle groups. This also gives you an overall more effective and challenging workout.
You get from 3 to 20 degrees of power ramp with this elliptical – which is basically what you get with the $1000 models too – so this is a great little find on a starter crosstrainer.
#2 Oversized, Adjustable Pedals
The 8.7 elliptical helps you customize your workout by adjusting the pedals.
You can choose from 3 different toe-heel angles to find which one feels most comfortable for you.
Plus different toe-heel angles may also help you to target and tone different muscle groups.
This is a great option if you have multiple users in your family as everyone can customize the workout feel to their liking.
#3 iFit LIVE Compatible
iFit takes your elliptical training to a whole other level. You can download new workouts from celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels where she coaches you through your workout.
You can sync and track your workout progress over time. You can also compete against friends and members of the iFit LIVE community. You can also map out new trails to run using Googlemaps.
Basically you’ll never run out of things to do with iFit. If you get bored easily this will help you stick to your workout goals!
#4 Long 20 Inch Stride
A longer stride means two things for you: First it means you’re giving your leg muscles a full, more complete workout (translation: more calories burned). Second it also tends to feel more comfortable and natural, especially if you’re over 5 foot 6.
The Nordictrack E8.7 has a general stride length – from 18 to 20 inches. The stride length changes and lengthens as you change the ramp settings.
#5 Heart Rate Monitor
You can stay in your target fat-burning zone by monitoring your heart rate with the hand grip sensors. The E8.7 also comes with the option to add in a wireless heart rate chest strap (you have to add the monitor in separately).
#6 Heavy 20 Pound Flywheel
A heavier flywheel helps to give you a smoother-feeling ride. You don’t get the jerky stop-and-start motion that you sometimes get with cheaper ellipticals.
While it’s not the heaviest flywheel that Nordictrack offers, this is one of the heaviest flywheels found at this price point (for example, brands like Horizon use 16 pound flywheels).
Cons of the Nordictrack E 8.7 Elliptical:
#1 iFit Module Required
While the 8.7 trainer is iFit compatible – it does require you to purchase the iFit LIVE module (about $99). You don’t have to have the iFit module to use this elliptical – it will workout without it.
But if you want all of the benefits of iFit, you’ll eventually have to buy the module.
#2 Simpler Design
While this is what you’d expect for a starter elliptical, the design on this trainer is very simple. It doesn’t have the covered roller base of higher end NT models.
The console window – while easily readable – is a bit on the small side. The console is dual color and not multi-color. So it’s a more basic design than the more expensive models overall.
#3 No Wireless Heart Rate Monitor
Some people prefer a wireless heart rate monitor as it tends to give more accurate feedback. This again is found on higher end models.
While it’s a bit simple in design, the Nordictrack E8.7 comes in at a fantastic price and includes some strong basics like a heavy flywheel, impressive stride length and even power ramp.
And with iFit LIVE, iPod dock and 20 built-in workouts, you’ll never run out of things to do. If you’re on a budget – but still want a quality name, this is your elliptical.
