Nordictrack Commercial 14.9 Elliptical – The Pros:
#1 Large 32 Pound Flywheel
A heavier flywheel gives you a smoother feeling ride without a lot of jerky stops and stars you often get with cheaper ellipticals.
The Nordictrack Commercial 14.9 trainer comes with a very heavy flywheel: 32 pounds (vs some of their starter models which come in around 20 pounds). This helps to anchor it, gives you really smooth transitions and much higher stability than cheaper machines.
This is great if you’re planning on heavier or longer workouts as the machine can easily take the extra use and abuse
#2 Full Color Web Browser
The Nordictrack 14.9 comes with a large, touch-screen, full color web browser – a full 10 inches which is the largest web browser that Nordictrack makes.
So you can surf the net, read emails or watch Youtube videos as you workout. The larger screen makes it easier to see your workout stats – or whatever website you’re surfing.
This feature alone can make your workouts much more enjoyable!
#3 Incline For Improved Crosstraining
Incline (or ramp) changes the slope of the elliptical path, using different groups of lower body muscles. It works kind of like incline on a treadmill. A lot of people like it because it can give you a more effective (and higher calorie burning) workout.
The Commercial 14.9 crosstrainer comes with a 0 to 20 degree incline ramp. So you can challenge yourself and crosstrain different muscle groups with this option.
#4 iFit LIVE
This trainer is iFit LIVE compatible. iFit connects your crosstrainer to the internet.
From there you can go online and download unlimited new workouts to your elliptical – including some from celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels where she coaches you through your workout through the built-in console speakers
You can also map out new trails to run all over the world with Googlemaps and iFit. There are preset “famous” trails like Central Park, Hawaii and Paris – but you can also map out your own.
#5 Tablet Holder Above the Console
The 14.9 has a sturdy tablet holder above the console. So you can watch your favorite movies or TV shows as you workout. The holder is easily adjustable so you can change the viewing angle based on your height.
And because it doesn’t interfere with the console, you can watch your tablet while surfing the net!
#6 Adjustable Pedals
This is a great feature that can make your workouts more customized (and comfortable). Choose from 3 different toe-heel angles on the footpedals and find one that feels most comfortable for you.
#7 Free Wireless Heart Rate Monitor
You get a free wireless heart rate chest strap with this machine. It sends constant feedback to the console on your heart rate.
A lot of people prefer the wireless monitor because it gives more accurate results. Plus, you don’t have to keep grasping the heart rate sensors to get your results (which can be a pain if you want to work your upper body with the arm bars).
Nordictrack Commercial 12.9 Elliptical Review – The Cons:
#1 iFit Live Subscription Extra
The iFit LIVE subscription is extra (around $99 a year). However you don’t need to use iFit in order to use this elliptical (you can also still use the web browser without iFit).
So you don’t have to buy iFit right away. You can wait and try it out later if you’d prefer.
#2 Not Really An Adjustable Stride
Nordictrack advertises this as an adjustable stride (20 – 21 inches). And many people find that a bit misleading. You can’t actually adjust or set the stride for your workout as you can with some of their other models.
The stride length changes as you change the incline – which isn’t really what most people think of when they think of an “adjustable stride”.
If you’re looking for a premium, front-drive elliptical with all of the entertainment bells and whistles you can’t go wrong with the Commercial 14.9 trainer. It has one of the largest flywheels Nordictrack makes for a smoother, more stable ride.
And it also carries the largest web browser for lots of workout fun. It also comes almost fully assembled from the box, which is another plus as you won’t be working for hours to put it together.
Where To Buy and Save:
