Is The Nordictrack ACT Elliptical A Good Buy For You?
Please Note: The Nordictrack ACT has been discontinued. A similar center-drive elliptical to consider is the Nordictrack Freestrider FS5i, which gives you a fully-adaptable stride and more stride length options.

Center drive trainers place the flywheels on either side of the footpedals instead of out front or in back.
This positions you more upright on the pedals – which many people to be much more comfortable.
It also has a lower step-on height which makes it great for homes with low ceiling heights.
Plus the added tablet holder and iFit Coach option can help add some entertainment to your workouts.

Nordictrack ACT Elliptical Review – The Benefits:
#1 Dual Side Flywheel Design
This is also called a “center drive” design because the flywheels are situated more in the center of the machine. There are some definite benefits to this design.
First of all, you tend to stand more upright on the crosstrainer – which feels more comfortable for many people. Plus the fact that you’re not leaning on the handrails as much can mean that you actually burn more calories per workout.
Also, the pedals tend to be closer together with this design – so you have less strain on your hips. If you’re planning on longer workouts, this can make a real difference in how you feel afterwards.
#2 More Compact Than Traditional Elliptical Trainers
Again, because of the design, the ACT is more compact than a traditional elliptical – and takes up less space. It’s more of a square than a long rectangle and the footprint is 64.0″ L x 31.5″ W – much shorter than your front or rear drive machines.
#3 Adjustable Stride
The ACT lets you choose and set your stride with 3 different settings – 18, 20 and 22 inches. These are all excellent stride lengths that will fully help to work your leg muscles.
Plus it’s great for multi user families as everyone can choose a stride that works for them. And since the stride adjust goes in 1/4 inch segments you can really drill down and adjust your stride to the optimal feel.
#4 Lower Step On Height
Because of the center drive design, you also have a lower step on height than a traditional front or rear drive trainer. This is a great choice if you have a lower ceiling height and you don’t want to be too close to the ceiling.
How high does your ceiling need to be? According to the Manufacturer, you’ll need about 12 inches above the tallest user’s height for this trainer – which is better than a lot of other trainers.
#5 Added Tablet Holder
Nordictrack added a sturdy bracket above the console that will hold your tablet. So you can watch your favorite shows or movies on your tablet while you workout.
Plus if you use iFit, you can connect it with your tablet to get some incredible visuals of the trails you’re running.
#6 iFit Coach Compatible
With iFit Coach, you can run trails all over the world and watch real-life landmarks pass you by in the tablet screen – it’s very virtual reality.
You can also follow popular personal trainers as they take you through workouts in the Swiss Alps to the shores of Greece.
Need some motivation? iFit Coach tracks your workouts over time to show you how much you’ve achieved – which can be very inspiring. You can also use it to track and set new goals.
iFit comes as an option on this trainer – it’s a monthly subscription service if you want to add it. However the elliptical works perfectly fine without it.
#7 Adjustable pedals
Customize your workout even more with the adjustable footpedals. You can choose from 3 different toe-heel angles to find the most comfortable fit for you.
Nordictrack ACT Elliptical Review – What You Need to Know:
#1 iFit Subscription Extra
iFit is an optional add-on (you don’t need it to use the elliptical). However if you want to try iFit, you’ll need to buy an online subscription when you get the elliptical.
Also note that if you don’t have a tablet that you can use to connect with iFit online, you won’t get as much use from iFit on this trainer like the HD workout videos.
#2 Smaller, Dual Color Console
The console on this trainer is smaller than other ACT ellipticals – only 5 inches. Plus it’s also dual color, not full-color like the Nordictrack ACT 10. This may or may not matter to you – it just depends on what you want.
If you’re looking for a center-drive elliptical with some great basics and design – at a price that won’t break the bank, you’ll probably love the ACT Commercial elliptical.
You get the benefits of the center drive design:
- More Comfortable Feel
- Closer Spaced Pedals for Less Strain on the Hips
- More Compact
- Lower Step-On Height
Plus with the iFit option, the tablet holder, an iPod dock and 32 built-in workouts, you’ll never run out of fun things to do while you’re on it!
