Pros and Cons of the Nordictrack ACT 7 Trainer
The Nordictrack ACT Commercial 7 elliptical is a step up from the original ACT crosstrainer with a bit more substance to it and more luxury options.
This includes a larger, full-color (vs dual color) console with built-in web browser, heavier flywheel and stronger warranty coverage.
The Nordic track ACT elliptical series is popular because they are the dual side flywheel machines.
What’s the advantage of this design?
Well it tends to feel more comfortable because you’re standing in a more upright position on the machine than on other types of crosstrainers. It also takes up less space and is more compact than a traditional elliptical.

Pros of the Nordictrack ACT 7 Elliptical Trainer:
#1 Dual Side Flywheel Design
This is also called a “center drive” design because the flywheels are situated more in the center of the machine. There are some advantages to this design.
You tend to stand more upright on the crosstrainer – which feels more comfortable for many people. Plus the fact that you’re not leaning on the handrails as much can mean that you actually burn more calories per workout.
Finally, the pedals tend to be closer together with this design – so you have less strain on your hips. If you’re planning on longer workouts, this can make a real difference in how you feel afterwards.
#2 Full Color Web Browser
The Nordictrack ACT 7 comes with a 7 inch full-color web browser built into the console.
So you can surf the net, read your emails or watch youtube videos, all with a simple swipe of your finger.
This is a great way to stay entertained while you workout (and workout longer!)
Plus the console on the ACT 7 is larger than the console on the ACT (7 inches across vs 5 inches) – which makes it easier to see your stats.
#3 Heavier Flywheel
The flywheel on the ACT7 is also heavier than the ACT model. A heavier flywheel gives you a bit more weight to the machine and can also make your elliptical stride feel much smoother.
#4 Adjustable Stride
The ACT 7 lets you choose and set your stride with 3 different settings – 18, 20 and 22 inches. These are all excellent stride lengths that will fully help to work your leg muscles.
Plus it’s great for multi user families as everyone can choose a stride that works for them.
#5 More Compact Than Traditional Elliptical Trainers
Again, because of the design, the ACT 7 is more compact than a traditional elliptical – and takes up less space. It’s more of a square than a long rectangle and the footprint is 54″ L by 31.5″ W – much shorter than your front or rear drive machines.
#6 iFit LIVE
This crosstrainer comes with iFit LIVE and you can connect through the online web browser console – or by using your tablet. You just connect it to your home Wifi and go.
With iFit you can do all sorts of wild and wonderful things.
You can download new workouts from Jillian Michaels where she coaches you through your workout through the built-in speakers. You can map out new trails to run using Googlemaps and see actual landmarks pass you by in the console screen.
You can sync and track your workouts over time to reach new goals.
You can also compete against friends and the iFit community online. Basically you’ll never run out of new ways to challenge yourself with this technology.
#7 Free Wireless Heart Rate Monitor
You get a Free Wireless Chest Strap Heart Rate monitor with this crosstrainer. Many people prefer wireless monitors because they are usually more accurate – and you don’t have to keep grasping the hand sensors to get a reading.
Cons of the Nordictrack ACT 7 Commercial Elliptical:
#1 iFit Live Subscription Extra
While you don’t need iFit to use this elliptical, if you do want to try iFit, the online subscription is extra (around $99 a year). But the online web browser still works without iFit – so you could always wait and try out iFit when or if you’re ready.
#2 No Ramp
Ramp or incline changes the slope of the elliptical and – while not necessary to have – some people do like it. Because of the limits off the center drive design, there is no ramp option with this machine. If you want an elliptical with ramp, check out the Nordictrack C 12.9 which is around the same price.
If you’re looking for the benefits of a center drive elliptical (without the cushy price tag of the gym models), you’ll definitely want to consider the ACT Commercial 7 model.
You get all the benefits of a center drive design (more comfortable upright position, more compact unit, etc) plus a lot of fun extras that you don’t get with the original ACT (full-color web browser, heavier flywheel, more built-in workouts, larger console).
