Thinking about a Nordictrack elliptical? You’ve probably heard a lot about iFit Coach.
It’s pretty much a game-changer in the exercise equipment world right now.
It takes a simple elliptical and turns it into your own personal fitness studio – with streaming fitness classes, personalized workouts, workout tracking and goal setting.
You can even explore famous world trails or take guided tours of popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast or the Swiss Alps – all from your elliptical console (or tablet).
iFit Coach came out a few years ago.
The scale of the project was certainly admirable (iFit spans across bikes, treadmills, ellipticals and even rowers), Unfortunately however, Nordictrack did a very poor job on the messaging.
So there’s a lot of confusion about iFit out there right now.
One of the top questions people have is:
Do Nordictrack Ellipticals Require iFit?
This is understandable.
When iFit was first released, it was optional. Nordictrack elliptical trainers did NOT require iFit.
Then there was a period back in 2017 where you did need to buy an iFit subscription when you purchased certain Nordictrack ellipticals – but not others.
However, that idea was quickly scrapped in favor of a better option.
As of this post, if you get your Nordictrack elliptical trainer directly from the Manufacture here, you can get a Free 1-year subscription to iFit Coach included (on certain ellipticals – a few models are excluded.)
This is a fantastic option.
This means you can try iFit out on your trainer to see if you like it for a full year – at no charge.
So you can explore the world trails, take studio fitness classes and get personalized workouts tailored to you for the full year – absolutely free.
No other manufacturer is offering anything like this.
(Please note however that this can change at any time. I don’t work for Nordictrack so I can only report on what they’re currently offering.)
But let’s say that you did get the free 1-year iFit Subscription included. This leads to the next question:
Will the Nordictrack Elliptical Work Without iFit?
If you decide not to renew the iFit subscription after the year is up – will your elliptical still work without iFit?
Yes, of course it will.
Your elliptical will work fine without iFit in manual mode.
Of course, you won’t get all the fancy tracking tools and video workouts of iFit.
But you’ll still get incline/decline, resistance changes, workout feedback on the console etc. just like a normal trainer.
However, there has been so much confusion over this issue (and a lot of online “reviews” by the competition to scare people). So I decided to talk directly to the source – the Nordictrack tech team, just to make sure.
They confirmed that yes, the elliptical – any Nordictrack elliptical – will still work fine in manual mode without iFit:
“None of the [machine’s] basic functionality is compromised. Users are able to run workouts and control all functions. They will not however, have any ability to use any of the Videos or Map content.”
In non-tech speak, that means that yes, you can use the trainer as a regular elliptical without iFit.
This makes sense.
Nordictrack would be shooting themselves in the foot if they only made ellipticals that run with iFit – since not everyone wants it.
In their excitement to release this cool new technology, they fell down a bit in the delivery of the message.
So as of right now, iFit is really just an option. Granted – it’s a very cool option – but it’s still an option.
Of course they certainly want you to renew the subscription after a year if you think the value is there. But you don’t have to. Your elliptical will still work without iFit.
So there you have it. If you want to see which elliptical trainers give you a Free year of iFit, you can use the link below.
Now, if you’re still in the research stage, you’re probably wondering to yourself:
What Exactly is iFit Anyways?
Well, iFit is really the next generation of smart, at-home fitness. It offers you several different things you can do on your trainer, including the ability to track your workouts, set new fitness goals and get personalized, new workouts to your elliptical every day.
You can take streaming fitness classes – including ones specifically designed for the elliptical trainer.
One of the coolest things with iFit however is the ability to take guided outdoor workouts all over the world – from Santorini, Greece to the ancient temples of Thailand.
There are literally thousands of iFit videos to stream through your console.
Just to give you an idea of what you get, here’s a video showing you what iFit Coach looks like on the Commercial 14.9 Trainer:
As you can see, it’s pretty cool – and unlike anything we’ve seen on an incline trainer console before.
What if You Don’t Want iFit on Your Elliptical Trainer?
So what if iFit is not for you and you DON’T want an elliptical with iFit?
There are a few ellipticals that are iFit compatible – but they don’t offer the free 1-year subscription. So you don’t even have to bother with trying iFit out – you can just ignore it and use the elliptical like a regular crosstrainer.
So do Nordictrack ellipticals require iFit? As of right now, no they do not.
According to Nordictrack, they will work fine without iFit Coach in manual mode.
Just to show you how cool iFit is, Nordictrack is currently offering you a FREE 1-year subscription to iFit on some of their elliptical trainers. You can use the link below to get it included.
I don’t know how long they’re going to continue this promotion. However as of right now, it’s a pretty great deal if you want to try it out.
